Abstract

Since the 1980s, ophthalmology in China has entered an era of rapid development. This period has seen many fine achievements in the field, including the development and establishment of world-class instruments and facilities, a marked increase in the number of SCI papers, successful international cooperative efforts and the frequent hosting of international congresses.

Despite these successes, China still lags a long way behind ophthalmology in developed countries, most particularly, in the amount of total governmental funding directed towards basic research and the quality of research outcomes.

This lecture will review the recent advances made by ophthalmology in China, highlight the problems hindering Chinese ophthalmic research and suggest some fundamental measures that will aid the further development of the field in China.
