Professor Fred Hilmer

Professor Fred Hilmer has been President and Vice-Chancellor of UNSW since mid-2006, following a distinguished career in academia, business and public life. A former Dean of the University’s Australian Graduate School of Management, Prof Hilmer spent seven years as Chief Executive Officer of John Fairfax Holdings Limited. He is a former Director of McKinsey & Company, has served on the Board of a number of Australian companies and played a major role in national economic reform in the 1990s as chair of the National Competition Policy Review Committee.

In 1991, the Australian Institute of Management awarded Prof Hilmer the John Storey Medal for distinguished contribution to the advancement of management thinking in Australia. Prof Hilmer was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1998 for his service to management education, competition policy and workplace reform.

Prof Hilmer holds a degree in law from the University of Sydney, an LLM from the University of Pennsylvania and Master of Business Administration degree from the Wharton School of Finance, where he was appointed a Joseph Wharton Fellow. He has written extensively on strategy, organisation and economic reform.
